The Land Rover BAR academy team have won the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup in a dramatic style.
Meet the Land Rover BAR Academy team:
Rob Bunce gets his experience from the world of offshore sailing, having previously competed in the legendary Solitaire du Figaro. He also has extensive experience on the yacht racing circuit and returns having been promoted to Skipper following his successful stint as foil trimmer for the Academy in the 2016 Series.
?Taylor, a 49er sailor, holds two World championship titles in the Feva (2008) and J111 (2014) classes, he has extensive experience on the water, in 420s and in the GC32 class. Following a successful Series on the helm, Chris returns rotating on the tiller with Owen Bowerman.
Owen Bowerman was winner of the UK round of the Red Bull Foiling Generation series in 2015. He is also highly skilled in the 49er and 29er classes, winning the RYA Autumn Series 2014 Event 3 – 49er FX and the 29er Inlands in 2014. He also gained the title of U22 RYA National Match Race champion and 29er youth champion in 2014. This year Owen returns to rotate on the helm with Chris Taylor, putting his vast dinghy sailing experience to very good use.
The young British sailor won silver at the 2016 Weymouth World Cup. Hanson takes turns on the mainsail with fellow Academy trialist Will Alloway.
A 49er sailor campaigning for Tokyo 2020. Alloway has won the Harken 29er Grand Prix and in 2014 he won the Tiger Trophy for the GJW Direct SailJuice Winter Series. Alloway currently sails the Olympic Skiff class, the 49er and is no stranger to the GC32 having sailed with the Academy in last year’s Series.
Adam Kay is a young British sailor who holds previous experience in the Extreme Sailing Series™, having raced as bowman for Lino Sonego Team Italia at the first Act of the Series in Singapore, 2015 and as headsail trimmer for the Academy in 2016. He has also been a key member of both GAC Pindar and Land Rover’s shore crew in the Series. Adam has one National championship title under his belt in the Tornado Class, 2013, and this year returns with the Academy team.
With a background in multihulls including the F18 and Nacras, Oli represented the UK at the 2015 ISAF World championships in the SL 16 catamaran. He also took part in the 2015 Red Bull Foiling Generation, fronted by Roman Hagara and Hans Peter Steinacher who are in a quest to find the sailing stars of the future across the globe. Greber competed on board for the Academy team during the 2016 Series and returns as trimmer for the 2017 Series.
With a background in the Skiff class, Batten has won a number of RYA Youth Championships in the 29er, and took silver at the Youth Worlds in 2011. Batten had his first taste of foiling in the 2016 Series with the Academy. He returns with a stronger vision of the GC32s, hoping to trim the team to a podium finish.
?The British sailor is a match racing ace, having been the first female to win the Youth Match Racing national championships. An experienced dinghy sailor and 420 World and European champion. Vose is the first woman to sail under the Land Rover BAR Academy title, her knowledge will prove a valuable asset to the team having had previous experience in the 2016 Series in Lisbon with Thalassa Magenta Racing.
?Topper and Laser Ace, Matt Brushwood is brand new to the Land Rover BAR Academy team, coming from a background in offshore sailing and dinghy sailing.
